“Get on the bike, hurry!” Tristan yelled, icy fear tearing through his veins as his fight-or-flight reflex kicked in. He didn’t know what had made the gangster wake up, but the fact that the man had awoken had now completely flipped the situation on its head.

The gangster, who was blind drunk, was slow to react, and he yelled and cursed in Spanish as he rolled around on the dirt, half-stuck in his sleeping bag, fumbling clumsily for his firearm.

Letting out a shriek of fright, Patricia clambered up onto the pillion seat of the bike. Tristan, thinking fast, pulled out the .357, aimed it at the front tire of the other bike, and fired. The thunderclap boom that echoed across the desert woke the other gangster immediately, and he sat bolt upright in his sleeping bag. The other, however, got such a fright from the loud bang that he drunkenly fell flat on his face just as he located his firearm.

Slamming the revolver back through his belt, Tristan sprang up onto the bike. With his heart racing at what felt like two hundred beats per minute, he somehow managed to remain calm. Moving smoothly, he turned the key in the ignition and then thumbed the starter button. The motor roared instantly to life, and the headlamp blasted out a sudden blaze of light into the darkness. Tristan clicked the bike into gear, twisted the throttle, and popped the clutch. The power kicked in, lofting the front wheel skyward as they took off at speed, spitting out a rooster tail of dirt from the madly spinning rear wheel as they sped down the dirt track.

Behind them, the startled, inebriated gangsters finally managed to extricate their bodies from their sleeping bags, and they grabbed their pistols and began firing at the rapidly disappearing red target of the bike’s taillight. However, the distance and the fact that they were both seeing double meant none of the shots came even remotely close to hitting the fleeing youngsters, and soon enough, they were back on the main dirt road, having left the ghost town far behind.

There was no way for the gangsters to pursue them, either, since Tristan’s point-blank shot had not only caused the front tire of the remaining bike to explode but it had also destroyed much of the front wheel itself.

“Oh my God, oh my God, I think I’m gonna throw up. I’m gonna puke, Trist, I’m gonna puke,” Patricia gasped, her voice barely audible over the rushing howl of the cold wind in their ears, battering their bodies from the speed at which they were racing through the night.

“You’ll be okay,” Tristan said, his pulse throbbing like a deep drumbeat in his temples, every molecule of his being feeling utterly alive with the thrill of what they had just accomplished. “I’ll pull over in a minute so we can compose ourselves. I just want to put a little more distance between those gangsters and us, just to be sure. They aren’t going anywhere with that destroyed front wheel, but I’m not about to take any chances.
